Extensive artificial drainage of agricultural land has been carried out because excessively wet soils are more difficult for farmers to access and cultivate. Over the years, the river system has been heavily modified to provide an efficient network of drainage and water supply, causing challenges for aquatic and riparian ecosystems, but also combatting drought events in the region.

The Lèze catchment (350 km², about 34,000 inhabitants) in south-west France is located in a hilly pre-mountainous area (Pyrenees), and is part of the larger Garonne catchment. The Lèze river has very marked seasonal variations in flow. A large irrigation dam in the upper part of the basin and 11 small dams along the river control the flow. The case study is located in regions that signed the Mission Charter of the EU Mission on Climate Adaptation.
 

Riseholme case study is located in the Anglian River Basin District (RBD), in the east of England. It is part of the catchment of the River Witham, which covers an area of approximately 3,000 km² and a population of around 375,000 people. The catchment is predominantly rural and there is high grade agricultural land in the Fens. The site is an example of the unique chalk streams. It is part of the Riseholme College Campus which is part of the University of Lincoln. 
 

The River Evenlode rises near Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, and is a headwater tributary of the River Thames, with a catchment area of approximately 430km². The landscape is predominantly agricultural, consisting of arable land, grassland and woodland.
